USING YOUR
flowers
Youâve put in the hard work, so now itâs time to enjoy the spoils of your labour. There is something very magical about arranging the flowers that you have grown. Youâve worked hard with your blooms to get to this point, youâve watched over them from tiny seeds to beautiful flowers, youâve picked them gently, given them a drink, and now you can enjoy the slowness of playing with them.
My top tips for flower arranging are to take your time, enjoy the process and leave any ideas of âperfectâ at the door. In practical terms, use sharp snips and work in a cool room, if possible, to avoid stressing the cut flowers. Finally, get creative â this is your chance to express yourself in flowers!
THE BASICS
I find it really overwhelming when I open a recipe book and see what looks like a million ingredients for one dish. With that in mind, I have made sure this whole section remains as accessible as the growing side of the book. Obviously, there are things you need for flower arranging, but here I offer some of my top tips for found or recycled objects that will serve you well, in place of spending lots of money on the âright equipmentâ.
Equipment
⺠String or twine
⺠Floristâs or craft wire on a reel (around 24 gauge)
⺠Snips or scissors
⺠Secateurs
⺠Sticky tape or paper tape
⺠Floristâs pot tape
⺠Paper (Iâm one of those people who keep all their giftwrap for this very reason â thereâs something extremely satisfying about recycling pretty papers)
⺠Ribbon (I like to use natural, hand-dyed silks and velvets for my styling; see the Resources section for my favourite ribbon suppliers)
⺠Card
⺠Hessian (burlap)
⺠Chicken wire
